What Is Directory Browsing?

In Plain English

Directory browsing is a web server feature that can allow visitors to see a list of files contained within certain website folders when no default page is present.

For a WordPress website, there’s usually no reason for the public to be able to browse these directories, so this functionality should generally be disabled.

Why It Matters

Your website contains many files that visitors never need to see directly. Preventing directory browsing reduces unnecessary exposure and makes it more difficult for attackers to gather information about your website’s structure, plugins, themes, or other files.

What Could Happen Without It?

If directory browsing is enabled, someone may be able to view filenames and folders that reveal useful information about your website. While this doesn’t necessarily mean the website has been compromised, the information can help an attacker identify potential targets or vulnerabilities.
